Laundry symbols cheat sheet
Care labels use simple symbols to tell you how to wash, dry, and treat your clothes. When in doubt, follow the cold water and gentle cycle rule—and read the whole label before the first wash.
Washing
Machine wash
Tub of water
Normal machine wash cycle.
Permanent press
Tub with one line underneath
Wrinkle-resistant or permanent press—use a gentle cycle.
Delicate / gentle
Tub with two lines underneath
Delicate fabrics—use a gentle cycle.
Hand wash
Tub with a hand inside
Wash gently by hand in cold water.
Do not wash
Tub with an X
Do not wash with water.
Cold water
Tub with one dot
Up to 80°F / 30°C.
Warm water
Tub with two dots
Up to 105°F / 40°C.
Hot water
Tub with three dots
Up to 120°F / 50°C.
Very hot water
Tub with six dots
Up to 140°F / 60°C—use only when the fabric allows.
Drying
Tumble dry
Square with circle inside
Normal tumble dry.
Tumble dry low
Square, circle, one dot
Low heat.
Tumble dry medium
Square, circle, two dots
Medium heat.
Tumble dry high
Square, circle, three dots
High heat.
Do not tumble dry
Square with circle and X
Avoid the dryer—air dry instead.
Dry flat
Square with horizontal line
Lay flat to dry.
Hang to dry
Square with curved top line
Hang on a line or rack.
Drip dry
Square with three vertical lines
Drip dry without wringing.
Dry in shade
Square with diagonal corner line
Keep out of direct sun while drying.
Bleaching
Bleach when needed
Empty triangle
Chlorine or non-chlorine bleach may be used.
Do not bleach
Triangle with X
No bleach.
Non-chlorine bleach only
Triangle with two diagonal lines
Color-safe or oxygen bleach only.
Ironing
Low heat
Iron with one dot
Up to 250°F—delicates and synthetics.
Medium heat
Iron with two dots
Up to 300°F—blends and general garments.
High heat
Iron with three dots
Up to 400°F—cotton and linen when allowed.
Do not iron
Iron with X
No ironing.
Dry cleaning
Dry clean
Empty circle
Professional dry clean—any solvent.
Petroleum solvent only
Circle with P
Dry clean with petroleum solvent only.
Petroleum-free solvent only
Circle with F
Dry clean with petroleum-free solvent only.
Wet clean
Circle with W
Professional wet cleaning.
Do not dry clean

Avoid dry cleaning.
Quick tips
- Read the whole label—not just one symbol.
- Sort clothes by color and fabric before you load the machine.
- Use cold water to save energy and protect colors when you can.
- Never put clothes in the dryer until a stain is gone—heat can set it.
- When in doubt, choose gentle cycle and low heat.
